Participate in our Research

Our research relies on the participation of control subjects as well as the clinical participants. The data acquisition process do not involve invasive devices such as needles or medications. We use non-invasive measures such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. fMRI does not involve X-rays or radiation, simply magnetic fields which do not affect your health. EEG measures require wearing a cap (similar to surf life saving cap) which contains very sensitive sensors which measure the electrical activity from your brain. These sensors simply sit on the surface of the head. In many cases reimbursement is also available for travel expenses.

While the clinical data are obtained via participants who are undergoing treatment in clinics that are collaborating with BDC, control subjects could register their interest by registering on the following link:

Please note however that, in addition to having English as your primary language and living near the Centre conducting the study, we must confirm that you meet certain criteria for inclusion in this study. Please see below for a list of exclusion criteria. This list of medical conditions, family history conditions, and life choices would not allow us to include your information with the research data:

Do you have -

  • A personal history of mental illness not related to physical brain injury
  • A personal history of physical brain injury
  • A personal history of having received a blow to the head that resulted in unconsciousness (within the last 5 years only)
  • A family history (mother, father, brother, sister, child) of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder.
  • A personal history of stroke or neurological disorder such as Parkinson's Disease, Epilepsy, Alzheimer's or Multiple Sclerosis
  • A personal history of serious medical conditions related to your Thyroid or Heart, or a history of cancer
  • A blood borne illness (HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C).
  • A severe impediment to vision, hearing, or hand movement.
  • A personal history of addiction to drugs such as Heroin, Cocaine or Amphetamines
  • A personal history of heavy consumption of Marijuana or alcohol
  • A personal or family history of genetic disorders

If you answer ‘ NO ' to all of these questions then you can proceed with the testing.
